Gina Affinito is pleased to present the new studio / gallery located in the historic center of Lecce.
Walking through the streets of the historic center of Lecce it is possible to hear the roar of water near the manholes. It is the River Idume that silently crosses the entire city and, in the basements of some historic buildings, it is possible to observe the aquifer. In the past it was used as an ablution tank by Jewish communities; the passage of these cults is testified by the presence of some Hebrew inscriptions, placed on the walls of the basement.
According to some legends, the river Idume is said to be magical, sacred to the nymphs, inhabited by childish spirits who would often have been heard. Cheerful laughter would come from the numerous wells in the city, which draw from the river's waters.
In Via degli Antoglietta, in the sixteenth-century historic center of Lecce, stands a building dating back to the year 1200: part of a convent annexed to the Jesuit complex, with a quadrangular courtyard plan.
It is accessed from Piazzetta Longobardi, near Corso Vittorio Emanuele, once called the "Piazzetta del sale" because it was used here.
With a careful conservation intervention, today part of the structure is the study of the curator Gina Affinito and houses the "Antica Saliera" space, usable as a gallery dedicated to solo and group exhibitions, a multipurpose room for presentations, conferences or meetings, a room for courses, photo shoots and cultural events in general.
An underground room of historical and anthropological interest was found in the basement of the building; unearthed, it houses a gallery for sculptures and ceramics.
The "Antica Saliera" space is spread over three levels:
basement: underground room
ground floor: gallery and multipurpose room
first floor: gallery and room for courses
